#892 The ability to look back and laugh

… Because what else can you do?

“Hey dude, remember that one time when that chick tried to steal your phone and said it was hers? And then she tried to take down your number plate so she could call the police and tell them you stole it?!”

“Yeah, looking back now it was pretty funny – but oh man – I wonder how that phone conversation went down with the cops…”

We’ve all had these moments.

So as we start moving forward, take a look back, take a good laugh to remember that life is

#893 Turning the tap on and getting instant hot water

I love my boyfriend. Yeah, yeah… I know, don’t throw up.
(Stay with me, this goes somewhere, I promise.)

There are many reasons for this love, most of which are unexplainable, but the explainable reasons I can list… One is that, purposely, BF doesn’t take too long in the shower, just so I get my share of hot water. Because:
a) it’s important to conserve water
b) it’s important to not use too much hot water and
c) he obviously loves me too. Kudos to you boyfrand! (I’ll go get your spew bags.)

Now I know how Rose from Titanic felt when Jack let her have free reign on the plank… Although there was enough room for him (greedy Rose).

Jack? You’re frozen? DEAD? I thought you were an amphibian! Damnit! There was enough room on the plank too… Oh well…

What’s even better is when the hot water is instant, so I don’t have to wait for it to heat up. This, in my opinion, is mostly imperative during the colder seasons, because no one needs to spend longer than 5 seconds starkers, in what may as well be zero-degree-temperatures when you’re unclothed…

“BRRR!”                                                                                                                          Image by graur razvan ionut | freedigitalphotos.net

A- AM   *shiver*    *teeth chatter*   R- RIGHT?

Cheerleaders: YEAH!!!

Cheer-Captain: … Can we go home now?

Sigh. Yes, you can. Way to have my back guys.

Sorry, I digress.

… Or what about when you need to wash your hands and it’s cold, the kind of cold that makes you want to stay in bed rather than get up to use the loo – Eek!!! … Oh wait, someone’s in there. OH WAIT –  did I just hear the toilet flush? AND did I hear that distinctive squeak of a hot water tap turning? … Does this mean I won’t get frostbite by practising good hygiene, because it’ll soon be my turn to use it next?

Cheerleaders: GO HOT WATER, GO!

Aww you came back!

Cheer-Captain: How could we not? Hot water is AWESOME!

Agreed. By stockimages | freedigitalphotos.net

Too right!

Don’t get me wrong, I could live without hot water, I’m grateful that I have it –  instant or not – but it’s that one little luxury I enjoy.

*Note: I was referring to the winter temperatures in Queensland, a state in Australia known as the “Sunshine State”… So yeah, our winters aren’t that bad, I’m just a sook ;).

Oh, and because I’ve been held up with offline chaos, here’s some cool GIF’s to-do with water, that I hope you will accept as a token of my sincere apologies:

#894 Quotes that stay with you

Quotes, sayings/expressions and advice – they all just seem to fit in nicely together with each other eh?

I love quotations because it is a joy to find thoughts one might have, beautifully expressed with much authority by someone recognized wiser than oneself.” – Marlene Dietrich (Click the name for more quotations!)

What I love about them is the fact that they’re remembered and recorded as they’re part of our history too!

Build a good name. Keep your name clean. Don’t make compromises, don’t worry about making a bunch of money or being successful. Be concerned with doing good work, and make the right choices, and protet your work, and if you build a good name, eventually that name will be its own currency.” – Patti Smith

I find the origin of quotes and sayings very interesting too, whether they come from a movie, book, music, poetry, stranger or your aunty after she’s had a few wines… (oh my).

If you think about it, quotes can be super educational as well, depending on the source of course. There’s actually a pretty educational quote on education itself!

A colleague said to me one time, “They don’t pay me to like the kids. They pay me to teach a lesson. The kids should learn it. I should teach it. They should learn it. Case closed.”

Well, I said to her, “You know, kids don’t learn from people they don’t like.”

She said, “That’s just a bunch of hooey.”

And I said to her, “Well, your year is going to be long and arduous, dear.”

Needless to say it was. Some people think that you can either have it in you to build a relationship or you don’t. I think Stephen Covey had the right idea. He said you ought to just throw in a few simple things, like seeking first to understand as opposed to being understood, simple things like apologizing. You ever thought about that? Tell a kid you’re sorry, they’re in shock.” – Rita Pierson

It’s also especially enjoyable spending time with people remembering movie quotes. They seem to create joy and laughter and they’re fantastic for making good conversation.

Oh and, of course, quotes and sayings are great to use when you don’t have words of your own. This goes without saying, but it’s true so I’ve said it! 😉

I know I’ve used this advice from my mother for myself and passed it on to friends if they feel like they’re backtracking:

Sometimes you have to take two steps back to take a step forward, but at least you’re getting there!”  – Mum.

They’re great icebreakers too. Often you’ll notice someone opening a speech with a quote, purposefully placed there to make their audience laugh. A great technique.

Sometimes, you can use quotes to your advantage and even creep people out. I absolutely love that you can freak someone out with a quote from a thriller and horror flicks. All you need is one! Hee hee hee…

Two words:

Here’s Johnny!” –  The Shining

Need something to get you thinking? Here’s one for the journo’s…

What is the essence of journalism if it doesn’t benefit society?” – Anas Aremeyaw Anas

Got a creative spirit and need some inspiration? Well there’s quotes for that, too…

Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” –Ira Glass

Oh and don’t forget the quotes you own yourself… Maybe you’ve got some personal jokes containing only one word that, when quoted, will get you and your mates rolling in laughter at the memory. Or maybe you’ve written down some pretty great poetry or song lyrics and possibly given some advice to someone that you found works for you too. It does feel pretty great knowing I’ve got some original quotes up my sleeve (though most are just nonsense).

It is, is it? … Is it, it is?” – Me.

Oh yes, quotes are very much-so  AWESOME.
So… Ladies, gents and otherworldly creatures, if you’d like to share a quote then please do! Start the conversation in the comments section below, yo. See ya there!

#896 Time made & making time

Alice_in_Wonderland_Clock_by_Della_Stock cropped

“Life gets busy and time is precious…” You’ve most likely heard or read people starting off a sentence using something similar to those words and I guess that’s because it’s so true! Actually, I reckon a majority of people could probably empathise over the fact that they know what it feels like to be swept off their feet by work, responsibilities and pretty much everything BUT romance!

Hi y’all! Just sittin’ here, waiting to be swept away… Yeeeuupaaah…                          Artist: QueenWerandra | Source: deviantart.com

So, personally, when someone takes the time out of their day to do something just for me, I understand, I feel so grateful and in return I feel appreciated and cared for too… Especially when it’s offered and I haven’t even asked!

Like when the doctor stays back a little longer for your appointment, even if you’ve offered to reschedule because of this busy-bee-ness… or what about when someone adds you into their hectic schedule and they’ve scribbled something out to pen you in… or when you’ve run frantically for the bus and the driver stops to wait for you when it’s already waaay past the stop and time is tight… or even when a friend or family member helps out on the weekend when it’s their only time they get to have break!

Sometimes they might say…

“Hey, don’t sweat it, no worries!”

“Anything for you!”

“No big deal, any time!”

“All good mate, hop on!” (Bus driver, can you guess?)

… and they shrug it off like it actually isn’t a big deal, but (to go a little deeper) the meaning behind it is quite significant.

When someone makes time for you, it can reveal the kind of person they are… It could show that they care about you as much as you care about them, they understand, they’re genuinely a nice person., they have been in your shoes and so on.

Heck, even when someone takes the time to give you a compliment, it can really add a lovely twist into your day!

“Hi, how are you?! Oh your dress is lovely!”

“Cool – I’m diggin’ the tie!”

“That colour really suits you!”

“You have such nice hair…”

“You look great!”

Oh, and this ain’t a one-way-street either. Don’t it just make you want to give back, pay it forward and give some others the time of day too? … I’ve definitely got time for that!

P.S. Remember to treat yourself and take some “me time” out too! 🙂

"Me" time! YAY! (Also lol, I love this photo!)

You know what I just did? I ran my very first 5k!

Becky 2

The gorgeous Becky and her pink dye!

^ Me. Yep, that’s right. ^

This is all part of my journey to becoming a better, healthier and new ME.
Not only was it a 5k, it was The Color Run.

Becky 3

Becky looking totally awesome and beautiful for her 5k Run!

Becky 4

Some very colourful backsides! See how many blue-bums you can spot ;P.

By the end of the race, you look like a rainbow. As you run, there are stations set up where people throw color on you. The color is just corn starch with dye in it, but its super fun.

Becky 5

Becky 6

Hahaaa! Gorgeous, green, greasy Becky!

Becky 7

Becky 8

Ooh la la!

The first station was pink, then yellow, followed by blue and they saved green for last. The stuff flying in the air made it a little difficult to breathe, but it was so much fun, I’m doing it again at the end of this month in another race called The Color Vibe.

BEcky 9

At the end of the race, we had a colorful dance party where we all got in a big group and threw our own color packets in the air. “Past me” would never imagine that “future me” would be a runner, or even do a race of any kind. I did something that I was very proud of and had fun doing it and it was AWESOME!

# 898 Tattoos (Contributed by Wendy)

A Tattoo Muse STar

I understand they’re not for everyone but I do have respect for those who choose to adorn themselves with colourful things such as flowers03Dand family trees, wild-life, badges of honour, their baby-child’s foot prints and other beautiful displays of love and affection.Heart
Something I wasn’t sure I’d personally ever do all started with a birthday gift certificate. After, the artist started he said, “You’ve chosen a most sensitive sight!”
“NOW you tell me”, I said and contemplated leaving as Phoebe had done on Friends,       with one dot she claimed was Earth from outer space! But I’d survived worse so persevered for one tasteful tattoo… a wild, delicate flower which has the ability to grow everywhere~ a Daisy. Carefully placed on the “inside” of the ankle, in the event obscurity was required.

A few years later, I experienced many losses in a short period of time. Dragonflies were everywhere! I’d learn they are messengers from the other side; their ever-present smiles, gentle presence and iridescent colour of faith representing the circle of life and faith in the after-life… I clung to their meaning with hope.
My first grand-baby-girl-child was born, and as I witnessed a friend give my grand-daughter her breath of life, no words could describe the experience.

I received another gift certificate for a new tattoo. I brought the artist a native depiction of Dragonfly, being part of our culture, I had to have. Although she was unsure of her own ability, I pleadingly convinced her she could do it. There was no time to waste, I had to have it NOW!
Centre stage, beneath my belly button…the life line. A blend of mixed blessing’s, this tattoo had been emotionally pain-full but with very little physical pain in application. Could’ve been I was numb, may just be the fact that the stomach has many layers of skin. A great personal site!

Then I thought, three’s a nice number and started to imagine the tattoo I’d have to get next~ Angels, Saints, Wild-Life, Flora and Fauna blessing’s from Mother Nature; family, friends and Bruce Springsteen, all crossed my mind. I wanted to honour all who have helped me with effervescence of life, naturally!

Came the time for me to embark on a journey with Jesus, and quest for essence, on my own. With loved ones and ancestors in spirit; parents, mentors and protectors. With guiding lights of life force, my children, my grand-babies and generations to come in mind and heart. I walked with deer, eagle, jays, raven, crow, horses, owl, fox, bear and many other creatures great and small. I slowed down to the rhythm of my own heart. It was truly amazing!

Upon return I had to find the chosen one who could help me symbolize this divine right of passage… accordingly and spiritually, through the art of tattooing… naturally, the time was now~ it had To-Be! I prayed intently and we were aligned.B60

No doubt he’s deserving of the awards he has received. With a whole lot of patience, empathy and understanding, Dion helped me select highlights to honour the value of my journey and their placement. Over a number of sessions, story came to life in fine art. There was very little pain because Dion truly knows the true art of tattooing.

As spring and summer approached, blistering hot days requiring scant attire now had people questioning and some even ridiculed with shameful remarks. A few times I wondered, then I met a young lady who helped me embrace through a movement called, “To Write Love On Her Arms.” (http://twloha.com/)

Recently, my dad heard about the changes I’d made in my life and decided to pay me a visit. Although I’m a grown up and it really shouldn’t matter, I didn’t want to hear condescending laughter or any negative remarks about something so awesome. When he asked, “And what are all these?” There was no under-tone, no chuckle. And with humble pride, I shared briefly all they meant to me. Much to my surprise he said, “Good for you!” and many other endearing things, then hugged me like never before!

While I placed one no-where near where I’d wanted it, but in the midst of displacement had forgotten, it’s become a reminder of the direct effect my actions and words can have on me; those nearest and dearest to me as well as the ripple effect far and wide, for generations. To be more gentle with myself and with others. This tattoo also reminds me of courage, fortitude and a strong spirit, which is a really big deal to display in living colour. 517

It took the fittest of survival, a journey of miles, some Holly Holy times to feel more alive… to see the road I was on in the distance behind and the one ahead, I choose to thrive on.

Today I wear my tattoos proudly, on feet, belly, arm and shoulder. And on the horizon I see big beautiful iridescent Butterfly Wings in flight with the script~ Valiant Grace… my next tattoo muse, to-be totally Awesome!

I don’t know if that’s what it’s called everywhere, but around here it’s when you call off work or don’t go to school just because you want to. You’re not sick. You don’t really have anything you have to do. You just stay home.

Everyone needs a break every once in a while. Just enjoy a day to yourself, watch old re-runs on the TV, eat a bag of chips in bed and don’t change out of your pyjamas. I haven’t done this in a while, so I’m due for one. I’ll get up, take the kids to day care and come back home. I might slip back into my pyjamas and make a cup of coffee…

… Or I might just go back to bed for a few hours. And then I get to watch TV. Not just that, but I get to watch whatever I want on TV!

(Source: Valentine-FOV-Stock on deviantart.com)

(Source: Valentine-FOV-Stock on deviantart.com) THE TV IS ALL MINE! MUAHAHA!

I have the remote and no interruptions.

After some TV, I might take another nap… who knows.

Oh, and I can read for as long as I want without having to stop to break up fights or cook some food. Although, now that we have a dog, I’d have to go feed him and let him loose to run around for a bit, but then I could just sit on the porch swing and watch the clouds roll by.

This mom is due for a good day off. No work. No kids. No hubby. No cleaning. No cooking. Just relaxing and catching up on sleep for a day. Doesn’t that just sound so AWESOME!
